Bearings as the crow flies (great circle), measured from north. From somewhere else, the bearing changes: that’s the whole game.
Oùcécap’s take
Aim at 0°, due north: that is the bearing for Hanoi from New York, over the North Pole, Siberia and Mongolia, whereas a flat map would point east, at 97°. From London, too, the map misleads: it would say 110°, east, while the compass reads 65°, north-east, for 9,234 km over Russia and Kazakhstan. Its nearest neighbour, Vientiane, lies 482 km to the south-west.
