Which way is Manila from…
From Paris, Manila lies at 59° to the north-east, 10,743 km as the crow flies.
| Paris | 59° north-east | 10,743 km |
|---|---|---|
| London | 57° north-east | 10,734 km |
| New York | 343° north | 13,673 km |
| Madrid | 55° north-east | 11,655 km |
| Rome | 67° north-east | 10,390 km |
| Montreal | 344° north | 13,173 km |
| Saint-Denis, Réunion | 67° north-east | 8,169 km |
Bearings as the crow flies (great circle), measured from north. From somewhere else, the bearing changes: that’s the whole game.
Oùcécap’s take
Forget the east that a flat map suggests: from London, Manila is at 57°, north-east, not 111°, because the shortest route crosses Russia and then China. From New York it is even more baffling: the map says 260°, west, and the compass 343°, north, over Canada, the Arctic Ocean and Siberia. Manila shares its latitude with Guatemala City.
