Bearings as the crow flies (great circle), measured from north. From somewhere else, the bearing changes: that’s the whole game.
Oùcécap’s take
The classic trap: on a flat map, Tokyo looks due east of London. With a compass, you aim at 32°, north-east, because the shortest route climbs over Scandinavia and Siberia before dropping down to Japan. Same surprise from New York or Montreal: you aim north-west, over Canada and Alaska, not west. A landmark to place it: Tokyo lies on the same latitude as Tehran, and almost the same as Algiers.
