Oùcécap’s take
Between London and Tashkent, flat map and compass disagree by 28°: the map says 102°, the compass 74°, still east but well to the north, 5,234 km away. From New York the gap becomes huge: the map shows due east (90°), the compass 27°, north-east, because the shortest route flies over Greenland and northern Scandinavia. A landmark: Tashkent lies on Rome’s latitude, and Kabul is due south, 756 km away.
