Oùcécap’s take
London, Brussels and Astana share a latitude. On a flat map, then, you would aim from London due east, at 90°; your compass says 61°, north-east, 4,764 km away. From New York, the effect is even stronger: 84° on the map, 21° on the compass, north, because the shortest route crosses Greenland.
