Saudi Arabia
Riyadh is the capital and largest city of Saudi Arabia, as well as the largest city on the Arabian Peninsula. It serves as the administrative capital of both the Riyadh Province and the Riyadh Emirate. It has been the Saudi capital since 1824, when it was designated as the seat of the Second Saudi State, the current form of the metropolis largely emerged in the 1950s as an expansion of the 18th-century walled town, following the dismantling of its defensive fortifications.

Oùcécap’s take
A flat map puts Riyadh south-east of London, at 127°. Your compass disagrees: 109°, east, 4,951 km away, because the shortest route runs across the Balkans and Turkey. From New York the gap is huge: 99° on the map, 52° on the compass, north-east. A landmark: Abu Dhabi lies due east of Riyadh, 768 km away, on the same latitude.
